San Diego Zoo - Hmmmm

One of my personal expected highlights was to go to the San Diego zoo, which we did today. I don't know how the zoo got this stellar reputation or why everyone thinks it's the best zoo in the world. Maybe it was the first to embrace the concept of keeping species in appropriate enclosures and that was what set it apart and made it better than any of the other zoos. But having been to zoos in Singapore, Perth, Melbourne and even remembering the old zoo in Cologne before its big revamp, I have to say this one did not meet my expectations.

That's not to say it's a bad zoo. Not at all. They have things going on all the time, it's fairly easy to navigate and they do have a good variety of animals. But it's certainly not the best zoo in the world. Some enclosures are too small for the animals that are being kept, especially the predators, and the elephant enclosure is just depressing. And it's not cheap to get in at $42 for a normal one day ticket.

My hopes are higher for the Safari Park tomorrow - let's see how that one goes.

We also had lunch in the zoo, which was quite nice and not overly expensive. I had the cobb salad and Simone had the pulled pork burger.
